Matchbox is the oldest of the three big brands. Started in the 1950's in England by Lesney Products, the brand helped set the standard for diecast collectibles. In 1997 the brand was purchased by Mattel, aligning the two competitors. Matchbox cars, trucks, etc. were originally designed for realism and not speed, as their wheels and axles created too much friction. Over the years they started to better compete with Hot Wheels by having faster cars.
In 1970 they launched the Superfast line of cars featuring 75 model numbers. This line features some competitive castings. In 1985/1986 Matchbox reintroduced the Superfast brand and advertised them as "The Fastest Matchbox Cars Ever!". This was followed by their Laser Wheels line, which utilized the same castings, but with different wheels. There are a number of strong performers in these series. Superfast has been used for additional offerings later as well.
