Ertl is a U.S. based (from Iowa) maker of toys, historically focused on diecast collectibles of farm machinery. In the early 1980's they started producing various (mostly) all-metal cars featuring vintage and modern sports and luxury models. As part of this new direction, they licensed cars for TV and Movies including Cannonball Run and the Dukes of Hazzard. A series called Cars of the World featured most of the available models worth racing. By my count there are 22 distinct models in the Cars of the World line. I have all of them with multiples of many.
These cars seem like they have good potential (given nice weights), but the results are mixed. A strong 3-Star car and a couple of 2-star performers, though, did emerge.

My top Ertl cars. The 3-Star '32 Ford Coupe, followed by the 2-Star '63 Corvette Stingray and Firebird Trans Am. The '32 Ford Coupe has a plastic base, all the rest have a metal base.
Rounding out the Top 5 are the 1-star Ferrari Dino and the Porsche 917. The Ferrari was featured in the Burt Reynolds movie, Cannonball Run. |
